JUNIOR HIGH BAND

Junior high band meets 3 times per week and is open to students who have successfully mastered a musical instrument at a level which will enable him/her to function adequately in the following areas:

  1. Present one half-time show at a home football game (at least 2 other PepBand Performances)
  2. Present three concerts during the school year (Christmas, mid-winter, and spring).
  3. Participate in any music contests/clinics at director’s discretion.
  4. If desired, participate in a small group or perform a solo for contest/concert (stage band, trios, etc.)
  5. Eighth grade will perform at graduation with the high school band.

Students who wish to participate in junior high band, but are not at a skill level on their instrument which would allow them to function with the band, must take a private lesson from the director. The director will request lessons with the student at his/her discretion.

 

Junior high band members are requested to participate in the summer band program. The summer band performs in the three Czech Days parades. The band may also perform at other functions at the director’s discretion. Seventh and eighth grade students are urged to take group lessons from the director during the summer. Seventh and eighth grade band members may participate with the high school pep band with permission from the director. Students may be asked to perform with the pep band occasionally.

Junior High Choir introduces a seventh grade student to choral singing and continues through the eighth grade. Students are given the opportunity to sing in unison, two part, three part and some four part music. Developing basic skills and knowledge, becoming a responsible musician and learning proper voice techniques are all covered within the curriculum guidelines. We will learn to work with the changing voice as well as develop better musicianship. This group will perform at Christmas, Soup and Song, pre-contest and contest at Milford. The students may also perform solos, duets, trios or other small groups and perform at the Milford Contest. Opportunities for Honor Choirs are available, such as:  The Singing of Youth of Nebraska.

Physical Education:  This course is designed to promote the fundamentals of skill development through the use of modified sport with the aim at developing skills needed for proper physical development. It allows students to achieve mature form in the basic skills of weight lifting, running, sport, and fitness with an emphasis on coordination, balance, gross and fine motor skills, cardiovascular and muscular strength and endurance. Students demonstrate the use of tactics like good sportsmanship, positive attitude, cooperation, teamwork, and effort within sport activities. They participate regularly in moderate to vigorous physical activities daily placing a lifelong participation in physical fitness. Students will be assessed on personal fitness 3-4 times a year.

Health Education:  This course is designed to develop the knowledge on Health Education.  Health concepts will be taught throughout the course of the year.  Throughout the year the areas of nutrition, personal hygiene, fitness and exercise, drugs and alcohol, sexual health, wellness, and lifestyle skills will be taught with a weekly assessment and at semesters to test knowledge.  Health education is focused to help aid in the development of the young adults in 7th and 8th grade.  It will help prepare them for other courses in Health education and further expand their knowledge on health information.

 

The intent of this program is to enable each student to enjoy physical activity through improved fitness levels and better understanding of each recreational and health activity.

The objective of English 7 is three-fold:  1) to explore the English language through the study of grammar; 2) to develop skills in using the English language through oral and written communication; and 3) to broaden thinking through the study of literature.  Grammar units will include the parts of speech, correct usage, and sentence structure.  Writing units will begin with the basics of writing and may culminate in the writing of organized paragraphs, poetry, and other creative writing.  Life-time skills such as spelling, vocabulary, dictionary usage, note taking, etc. will be taught.  An appreciation of literature will be fostered through the reading of short stories, novels, and poetry.  Book talk presentations of student-selected novels are an integral part of the classroom multicultural experience. Students will use technology as appropriate and practice the norms of appropriate and responsible behaviors.

Seventh grade students will understand and use color theory with tempera paints. The students will understand 1 and 2 point perspective with an engaging project that shows the interesting affect this can have on an artwork. Students will work with value to understand how this can enhance an artwork. Students will also do a hand built clay project in addition to working 3D with papier-mâché sculpture. This is an introductory course giving eighth grade students insight to other countries and their perspective languages and cultures. This class will be dedicated to understanding the basics of communication and its importance. During the fall semester will spend time learning about different cultures and languages, and how language influences culture. Students explore a variety of careers in agriculture and gain knowledge and skills about animal science and plant science. Students complete several projects to learn about agriculture concepts. Agribusiness covers skills necessary for entry into employment or furthering education in an agriculture business. The course includes the study of business organizations, business structures, job applications and interviewing, human relations, marketing, selling, displaying, using business machines, management and entrepreneurship skills. Dual Credit Options

The following courses are offered at Wilber-Clatonia as Dual Credit options, but may be taken for high school credit only, if preferred. Chemistry II is a two-semester laboratory course designed for the student interested in a career in science, a science related field, or a health careers related field. This course expands on the concepts learned in Chemistry. Additional aspects of chemical reactions including limiting reactants, percent yield, equilibrium, reaction rates, and thermochemistry are considered. Math skills will be frequently used to solve chemical problems. This course will go into much more detail than chemistry and give the students an understanding of the major fields of inorganic chemistry.

 

This class may be taken for Spring Semester Dual Credit through Peru State College for seniors who have successfully completed Chemistry and Algebra II.

(4.5 SCC Credits)

 

This course is designed to provide students an opportunity to become familiar with the Livestock and Meat Industries. Students will practice methods of selection and evaluation of live animals and carcasses, train in selection of breeding animals of economic importance, explore breeds, sex, and age classifications of livestock. Discover live animal caned carcass patterns, survey the live animal and carcass characteristics as well as explain the relative values of retail and wholesale cuts. * Students may be required to attend and compete at a District Livestock Evaluation Contest.

 

This class may be taken for Dual Credit through Southeast Community College for students who have taken Intro to Agriculture Studies and Food and Natural Resources.

 

 

 

 

 

College Credit Options

Public Speaking, Psychology and Sociology are offered as a distance learning option. The sending site is Southeast Community College and the instructor is an SCC faculty member. They are college credit only options. All college credit classes that are not taught by a Wilber-Clatonia instructor will not affect a student’s class rank or GPA. Registration with SCC and a textbook is required and are at the student’s expense. No minimum ACT is required at this time.

Provides both theoretical basis and practical instruction for speaking effectively in public. Emphasis on training in basic speech skills, development of voice, topic selection, audience analysis, speech preparation and organization, researching, strategic and creative language use, effective listening and delivery skills, and common types of public speeches, acknowledging the influence of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

ELL & VOCATIONAL TRAINING

 

ELL Program Model/Description

 

The Department of Education will provide programs of English language for students that are English Language Learners (ELL) as required by law by the Nebraska Department of Education Title III Accountability Office. ELL students are those students whose native language is other than English and who have such difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, as measured by an English language proficiency test. These impediments contribute to the individual’s inabilities to meet state performance levels, to achieve in English instructed classrooms, and to fully participate in society.

 

Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools has implemented a program model which is a systematic, research-based approach that enables students to meet academic standards using the English Language. Instruction for ELL students will be provided using the following strategies or a combination of them:

 

Pull-Out Strategy

ELL students leave the classroom part of the day to receive ELL instruction, often focused on grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills.

 

Push-In Strategy

Students are served in a mainstream classroom and the ELL teacher or a para-professional will provide clarification and use ELL strategies to further their acquisition of the English language within the curriculum content.

 

When necessary, Wilber-Clatonia will employ a different strategy for new comers:

 

Newcomer/Sheltered Instruction

Students will leave the classroom for a good portion of the day to receive ELL instruction, acquiring beginning English-language skills in addition to core academic skills. Their native language may be utilized, if available.

 

 

Vocational Training

 

This course is for those special education students that have been identified as a student that will need some assistance in their transition to the world of work.  The objective is to place student in an environment where they can build confidence and learn soft work and job keeping skills.  SKILLS: Teamwork (being cooperative and showing leadership when necessary), Communication (articulate oneself well, being a good listener, and using appropriate body language), Time Management (showing up on time and fulfilling expected tasks), Flexibility (adapting to change), Patience (accepting criticism and applying lessons learned) and Motivation (taking pride in a job well don
