Doane Leadership Article

On Tuesday, October 17, Wilber Clatonia’s 6 sixth graders and two fifth grade officers from student council attended a leadership conference. The conference was held at Doane Campus in Crete, Nebraska.
At the beginning of the conference all schools went to the auditorium where we were met by Demoine Adams, a former Nebraska Blackshirt and also a great motivation speaker. Demoine Adams talked about training your leadershape. Leadershape is all about training and being a leader. Some important parts of his speech were to be positive examples, to be a role model and how to train your cheer.
The first session we went to was about team building. At the team building session, we learned how to work with other people by doing different activities that involved team building skills. We passed a bag of balloons around in a circle with different tactics. We learned how to work together and how to get things done in a quick and efficient way.
Our second session was about bullying with Demoine Adams. He talked about ways to stop bullying and how to stand up for people. Some specific points in his speech were a safe, respectful, responsible environment, bullying is not allowed, to speak up, step up, and how your voice is your choice. Another important point is to team up against bullying.
The next session was about fundraising ideas for our school and how to help out in our school. Our group came up with some ideas pertaining to a fun run. We talked about al the details about how to make it happen. Some other ideas from other schools were to make posters, garbage pickup, and many other great ideas.
After that we had a break. During the break we walked around the campus and looked at everything around us. Then we went to eat in the Doane Tiger Den.
Our last session was with Miss Nebraska, Allison Tietjen. She talked about ow to change the world like a hero. She also talked about her platform which was about honoring retired veterans and people in war. Some important points in her speech were how different heroes come in all forms, to how respect, to be grateful, and to be thankful, and perseverance. One big question in her speech was “How can your be heroes that change the world?”
Overall, the Doane Leadership Conference was very helpful for our student council. We learned many things and will take those to school to get better as leaders of our school.
