With the completion of Czech Days and the County Fair it is again time for school to start . The first day of school is Thursday, August 14 with a 2:00 p.m. dismissal. Teachers have been in summer workshops and attending college classes and preparing for the new school year. Parents have expressed to me their children seem to be ready of school. Or is it that parents are ready for school?
The custodial staff have been busy over the summer making repairs and doing cleaning in preparation of the new school year. The buildings look great. Floors and hallways are waxed, classrooms are cleaned, and repairs made. Some of the major maintenance projects this summer involved replacing broken and cracked parking lot cement, sidewalks, and repair of the HS gym ceiling tile and lights. We also extended the K-6 cement play area .
As you read in past issues of the paper, we also installed a new phone system for the school. This will provide an active voice mail for teachers and office school employees.
This year we will also introduce a messaging system for parents and staff. The message system will inform you of snow closings, special school events, and emergencies on your cell, computer or home phone. You must personally register on the school web page if you want to receive it the messages. Just double click on the “Beacon” emblem is you want to receive the messages.
This year we welcome four new teachers to our system. Three at the high school and one at the elementary.
Addie Dorsch will be teaching math in the high school and comes to us from Papillion-LaVista South high school. Sara Hartzell returns to teach high school science and most recently worked in the city of Lincoln and Lancaster county as a community planner. Andrea Brader will be teaching Ag Education and comes to us from Hastings, Nebraska. She worked for the Adams County Extension office and has an excellent background in horticulture.
Our one new elementary teacher is Jenna Schuerman who will be heading up our new preschool program. She currently operates a day care and did her practice teaching in Beatrice.
Again we ask your cooperation and attention to safety. Remember one entrance off Shimerda Street is a one way into the parking lot and the other exit is a one way leaving the parking lot. Please do not use the handicapped parking if you do not have a sticker. Buses will load and unload again in front of the elementary. Please stay away from parking in that area.
Again on every Friday we will be dismissing the students at 2:40 p.m. We will use this time for faculty, team meetings, and training.
Again, your continued support throughout the year of the many student programs is appreciated. I hope to see you supporting the Wolverines this fall.
